About this event

Communication Ethics in a Polarized World

It's never been more challenging to manage effective and credible public messaging in a climate of escalating disinformation. Dr. Brett Miller draws on decades of research, teaching, and consulting – and over a year on the road, listening to hundreds of Americans tell their stories – to find a pathway through the clutter and a framework for fostering excellence in communication.

About the Speaker

Brett Miller taught and coached speech and debate at Parkview High School for 10 years, then completed his Ph.D. at Mizzou and served as a communication professor at Southwest Baptist University for 20 years. He has published numerous studies on political rhetoric and public image repair. After the increased hostility and polarization surrounding the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, Brett and his wife retired from their teaching jobs, sold their house, bought a campervan, and traveled the country for more than a year, listening to over 700 people – from working-class folks to presidential candidates – tell their stories about the outrage and division in America. Brett continues to listen, write, and speak on related topics. Since 2019 he has taught a graduate seminar in communication ethics at Drury University.
